City hall
The most impressive building on the square is definitely the town hall and its architect was the renowned Austrian architect Max von Ferstel (1859-1936) from Vienna, who was famous for designing historicist buildings. Its inscription above the portal announces that the building was built in 1906/1907, and it grew on the site of a late Gothic building called Poskočnik's House. Poskočnik was a rich merchant of Slovenian descent who established himself in Ptuj at the end of the 18th century. The house was already built by the Dominicans in 1571 and had the same floor plan as the present-day magistrate's office, only one floor lower. Its most remarkable part was the corner pier with relief decoration. In the first half of the 19th century, the building was extensively remodeled, but it preserved the aforementioned late Gothic corner pier.
