Ethnological Museum Dr. Prof. Matija Murko

Matija Murko was born in Drstelja in the parish of St. Urban. He attended folk school at home and in Ptuj. All his life he was grateful that his father enrolled him at the age of ten in the fourth grade of the German school in Ptuj, so that he could learn German earlier and better. He attended junior high school in Ptuj, and high school in Maribor. He was an excellent student, especially in the Slovenian language. From the third grade on, he supported himself completely on a small stipend and a lot of instruction. Today, Murkova Street in Ljubljana and Murkova Street in Ptuj are named after him. You can visit the Ethnological Museum of Matija Murko in Drstelja, where the owner Janez Žumer will certainly treat you to a homemade drop and some cold cuts.
