The Orpheus monument, along with the Ptuj veduta, has long been a symbol of the oldest Slovenian city. A magnificent marble tombstone from the 2nd century stands in the very center of the old city center on Slovenské trg in front of the city tower. It is considered the oldest open-air lapidary (lapidarium, stone) in Slovenia, named after the Ptuj historian and curator Simon Povoden (Povodnov museum). He was born on October 15, 1753 in Vrhovci near St. Juriju ob Pesnica, and died on November 6, 1841 in Ptuj. He devoted his main love to the study of local history, for which the classic Ptuj soil gave him not only an initiative, but also a rich breeding ground. In order to preserve old Roman monuments and remains from destruction, in 1830, when he was a chaplain in Ptuj, he had Roman monuments known up to that time built in Ptuj's City Tower, thus establishing the first open-air museum in our country. Upper Pannonia.
