Church of St. Jurij in Ptuj is one of the most interesting cultural monuments in Slovenia. It stands on Slovenski trg, or on the southeastern (SE) outskirts of the oldest part of Ptuj, on the outskirts of castle hill, or on the edge of the hill, where it overhangs the younger eastern part of the town. Already in the 1st century, a local Roman road led along it to the Grajena valley and further east. In the immediate vicinity of the church, archaeologists discovered the remains of an early Christian basilica from the 4th century in 1937, which proves the suburban character of the aforementioned road and the purpose of the current church premises in late antiquity. Due to its extremely interesting history, several art historians have dealt with the architectural-historical design of the church, but they had rather different views.
